MICROBIOLOGY AND MINERALOGICAL PARAMETERS OF OXIDATIVE COVER LAYERS MIXED WITH ORGANIC COMPOUND
Abstract
Landfills and open dumps are responsible for a considerable amount of toxic gases emitted into the atmosphere. Among the most worrying gases emitted in these places and highly associated with the greenhouse effect, there are carbon dioxide and methane, the latter being about 28 times more harmful in this regard. Therefore, a promising mechanism is currently the oxidation of methane gas through alternative cover layers with the addition of composted material, once this allows some of the methane that would be emitted into the atmosphere to be converted into water, CO2 and biomass by the microbiological potential of the organic compound. Thus, this work seeks to implement cover layers with mixtures of soil and composted material to meet the methane emission criteria in the atmosphere and to make feasible the use of composted material. For this, the chemical composition, X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical microscopy and microbiology of the materials were analyzed to verify the performance of soil cover layers mixed with organic compound in volumetric ratios of 1: 1 and 2: 1 before the gas flow.
